The Asus G751JY-VS71(WX) gaming laptop has a lot of high-end features with a somewhat inflated price-tag to match. The Core i7 HQ processor, 16 GB of RAM, 1 TB (mechanical) hard drive and 17.3″ G-Sync display are certainly impressive, although some people are let down by things like the speakers and the fact that it lacks an SSD drive.
Intel Core i7 4720HQ
Everyone (hopefully) already knows that Core i7 processors are top of the line. What people may not know is that there’s an HQ variation that’s even more powerful than “standard” Core i7 chips. It’s a mystery to me why Intel needs to create so many variations of their chips, but the fact remains that HQ processors are as good as you can get. Don’t agree? This is definitely in the mobile processor top 10, which is more impressive than it sounds considering there are literally hundreds of different mobile processors floating around. This processor runs at 2.6 GHz and can jump to 3.6 GHz in turbo mode.
16 GB of RAM
Do I really even need to cover this? If you have no idea why 16 GB of RAM is good, just know that other top of the line laptops have 8 GB of RAM, which is normally more than enough for most people. Double that and you’ve got a machine that can handle just about anything you could possibly throw at it.
17.3″ Full HD G-Sync Display
This is one of the coolest features of this laptop. Not only do you get an amazing video chipset with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX980M, you also get a display panel that can support the G-Sync technology (and a rather large display at that!). My only complaint is that I think they kind of skimped on resolution a bit for a display this size on a top-shelf laptop. Would it have killed them to go 4K or QHD at the very least?
Dual Cooling
This is something I really like to see in a gaming laptop. When you’ve got a powerful, high-end processor running alongside a powerful, high-end graphics chip you’re going to be generating A LOT of heat. The dual fan design in this laptop helps to cool both the processor and the graphic chip simultaneously to avoid overheating. The only downside is having an additional point of failure with an extra fan as well as the need to clean another fan, although this is almost unavoidable on a laptop like this.
Connectivity and Whatnot
I really like the fact that they included four USB 3.0 ports. I really DIDN’T like the fact that they decided to go the route of Thunderbolt instead of USB 3.1 (USB-C). Maybe I’m just a connectivity snob or I just have no faith in emerging standards, I just don’t see anything taking USB out any time soon, especially considering how great USB-C is. That being said, this laptop also has a full-size HDMI port along with other common connections like VGA (D-sub), spdif (Why oh why?), headphone, and microphone jacks.
Networking
802.11AC? Check. Gigabit Ethernet? Check. Anything else worth mentioning here? Not likely.
